This project analyzes the effect of extended families on the well-being of children in at-risk nuclear families. It predicts that coordinated family intervention often saves children from the trauma of losing significant emotional ties during legal conflicts.
The project is analyzing the effects of the Family Group Conference?a family network empowered to make custody and other decisions for children of at-risk nuclear families?on children. In the past, little attention has been paid to the FCG. Through this study, researchers are coming to a better understanding of the positive role extended families have in these children's lives.
This analysis is being done through examination of case records, family dynamics, and interviews with participating families and professionals.
