With the recent advances in the study of the human genome much has been written about the relationship between genetic and behavioral variables. It is commonly accepted that genetic makeup tends to strongly influence behavior. Biology, however, is not destiny. Family socialization may play a key role in whether such tendencies are expressed in socially useful or socially destructive ways.
This study will link two previously unrelated longitudinal, multi-generational family studies on the BYU campus, Scott Woodward's "Molecular Genealogy" and Tom Holman's "RELATE", in order to examine the relationship between genetic and family variables. It is hoped that this study will provide the beginnings of a conceptual model that tells how families can work to achieve socially valued outcomes in their members who present biological challenges.
