The Effects of Challenging Recreation on Family Strength

, Recreation Management and Youth Leadership

This study seeks to examine the efficacy of three outdoor challenge programs in promoting family strength among families with at-risk children who have participated in therapeutic wilderness programs. Outdoor challenge will include interventions based on two principles associated with successful families: 1) the enhancement of family communication and 2) the strengthening of family efficacy in overcoming challenges in outdoor recreation and the generalization of that efficacy to everyday challenges.

These factors will be studied in the context of three outdoor challenge scenarios: a survival trip (Group 1), a hand cart trek (Group 2), and a camp-based program (Group 3). A control group engaging in normal life activities will also be employed.
