This study will focus on the patterns of interaction between parents and infants, and their subsequent impact on developmental processes. The purpose of the study will be to explore predictive relationships between demographic, family, maternal and infant factors and the quality of mother-infant communication over time.
An exploration of factors that affect communication will lead to a better understanding of the stability of early communication systems and their influence in shaping several developmental processes including mental, emotional and physiological regulation.
The study predicts that when there is temporal stability in supportive factors, such as marital quality and the social network, communication styles will be stable.
