Cultural Practices and Perinatal Outcomes in Mexican American Women Giving Birth in Utah

, College of Nursing

This study explores the reasons behind why Mexican American women who are less acculturated give birth to healthier babies than Mexican American women who are more acculturated. The purpose of this study is twofold. The first is to determine if acculturation is associated with demographic variables, patterns of prenatal care use, and perinatal outcomes in Mexican American women giving birth in Utah. The second is to determine if there is a significant relationship between acculturation levels and scores on the Utah Test for the Childbearing Year, which measures beliefs about childbearing and child rearing.

Mexican American women who have given birth at McKay-Dee Medical Center, Mountain View Hospital, and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center will be study participants. Following data analysis, phase 2 of the study will generate qualitative data in focus groups with a subset of women. A community based peer mentoring educational intervention will then be developed.
