The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons for discrepancy between principles of nutrition and actual implementation of healthy eating patterns in college-age students. Specific areas of concern include knowledge of nutrition principles and perception of importance, family of origin meal patters, self-perception of meal preparation skills, and sense of urgency toward eating nutritiously.
The sample for this study will include 500-600 students from FSN 100, winter semester 2001. Data will come from self-kept diaries of food intake and exercise for three days. A follow-up survey of these same students will be conducted, including selected questions from the Dietary and Health Knowledge Survey, an assessment of family of origin meal patterns, and students' self-perceptions of meal preparation skills.
