Children's Social Development

, Marriage, Family and Human Development

This project focuses on children's development in different social and cultural contexts. The focus is on examining how extra familial (e.g., culture), personal (e.g., child temperament), and familial processes (e.g., marital relationships, parenting) are related to children's social competence in the peer group.

Parenting, family, and child social skills data have been gathered in Australia, China, Japan, Louisiana, Russia, and Provo. Numerous studies have been and are being published from these data sets. Findings contradict recent scholarly notions suggesting that families, and particularly parents matter little in children's lives. The project also incorporates data gathered in the Center sponsored Families With Disabilities project and other research being conducted by the speech-language pathology faculty at BYU.
