Long-term Post-war Psychosocial Adjustment in Bosnian Adolescents and their Families: A Qualitative Approach

, Psychology

This study will serve as a qualitative supplement to a quantitative longitudinal study that was conducted in fall 1999, spring 2000, fall 2000, and spring 2001 in Bosnia. The primary objective of this project is to gain a richer, more in-depth view of the long-term impact of the Bosnian conflict on adolescents and families six years after the war.

The study will be conducted using approximately eight focus groups, comprised of adolescents and their primary caretakers, who will be recruited from the two Sarajevo area secondary schools that have served as the sites of the longitudinal study. The focus groups will concentrate on war or post-war factors that the participants identify as either facilitating, or detracting from, their abilities to carry on effective parent/adolescent relationships.

The study and its findings will contribute to many on-going projects in Bosnia that are designed to promote government advocacy, public education, and direct therapeutic intervention for Bosnian adolescents and their families. In addition, it is hoped that the findings will have implications for family-based interventions with other populations and settings, especially those exposed to large-scale disasters.
