Health Literacy Intervention among Latino Families in Rural Utah

, School of Social Work

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based intervention program to improve the knowledge and skills of Spanish speaking families in accessing health care services in a rural community. The project involves three main phases:

1) A pretest establishing a baseline to guide strength-based interventions with a minimum of 50 families.

2) Implementation of the planned service, including a three-session Health Literacy class in Spanish for the families.

3) A posttest determining the effectiveness of the intervention in terms of facilitating the accessing of resources and evaluation of its relevance to other rural communities attempting to better meet the needs of Spanish speaking families.

The proposed outcome of this project is that by guiding Latino families to become literate in the United States' health care services and facilitating their medical decisions their overall family health will increase and parents will be empowered in the rearing of their children. Ultimately, increasing Latino families' access to health care will improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and the community.
