How LDS Families teach "Media Literacy" to their Children

, Communications

This study will utilize qualitative methods to 1) provide a profile of media use patterns by LDS families, young adults, and youth; and 2) examine how media literacy is being taught-either effectively or ineffectively-in LDS homes.

The project consists of two primary components.

  1. A series of surveys of LDS family media practices and habits to be conducted in three parts: a) Survey of LDS adults (married with children), b) Survey of LDS youth (ages 12-21), and c) survey of LDS young single adults (ages 21-30).
  2. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with 200 LDS families (parents and children) from around the country.

Findings from this study will be used in a book, Media Literacy for LDS Families, currently being proposed by several Department of Communications faculty to editors at Deseret Book, and may be useful in the development of materials to support efforts by LDS families to improve media literacy training in their homes.
