Geneva Steel began to close down in late 2001 and by March 2002 had laid off almost twelve hundred workers. A survey was conducted in June and July of 2002 showing that 42% of those workers were still unemployed. Research is now being collected as to study the impact of joblessness and uncertainty on the family well-being among these steel workers.
