The Effect of a Psycho-educational Program on Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) and Marital Satisfaction

, Marriage and Family Therapy

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a systemically based psycho-educational program on an illness—specifically, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)—and on marital satisfaction, perceived criticism and intensity of emotional involvement. While there have been studies that have examined psycho-education’s impact on health, few have been conducted by family therapists, and fewer have been systemic. This is the first known study to use a psycho-educational program as the primary mode of intervention with TMJ.
