At-Risk Individuals’ Awareness and Motivation to Participate in Premarital Preparation Programs Following Completion of the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE)

, Marriage and Family Therapy

The purpose of this study is to investigate important outcomes of single young adult participants’ completion of a comprehensive premarital assessment questionnaire called the “RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE). RELATE assesses important premarital predictors of marital satisfaction in three general areas: (1) individual factors like emotional health; (2) couple factors like couple communication skills and conflict management; and (3) background factors like family-of-origin functioning (Busby, Holman, and Tinguchi, 2001). Although research shows participants rate RELATE as useful in preparing for marriage (Larson, Vatter, Holman, and Stahmann, 2004), little is known about how individuals or couple actually use their RELATE printouts results to improve themselves or their relationship before marriage.
