Generation XXX: Pornography Patterns in Emerging Adulthood

, Marriage, Family and Human Development

Pornography is becoming a prevalent part of life in the United States. Sex is reported to be the most frequently searched topic on the Internet (Cooper, Delmonico, & Burg, 2000) with pornographic search engines requests totalling approximately 68 million per day (25% of total search engine requests). Recent reports estimate that apporximatley 40 million adults in the United States regularly visit Internet pornography sites (Ropelato, 2006). The purpose of this study will be to examine the developmental patterns of pornography use and accepthance among a normative sample of emerging adults (between the afes of 18 and 25) in the United States and to compare usage rates across cohorts within this developmental period. We have developed a an assesment protocol to expand on our earlier work and to more fully investigate how patterns of pornography acceptance and use originate and are practiced. We will also examine how pornography patterns are associated with emerging adults' sexual attitudes and behaviors, substance use patterns, and family formation values.
