Take the Whole Family:  Vacationing in Cold War America

Susan Rugh, History

This project, called "Take the Whole Family: Vacationing in Cold War America," supports the ideas in the Proclamation on the Family and thus supports the goals of the family Studies Center in supporting research related to "marriage, parenting, child, human, and family development and well-being."  Family vacations are an important way in which parents and children strengthen family bonds through travel, whether it be for recreation or travel.  By inderstanding the historu of the family vacation in America, how it evolved, and how it came to take its present forms, will help us understand the complexity of family relationships and how present patterns of family leisure might contribute to strengthening families.
